Dominance Matrix Question?

I'm not sure how dominance matrices work, What I understand is that if teams tie, you can work out 2-step dominance by using m+m^2, but I don't understand how a team can for example, play each other more than once, or what else to do, sorry guys, I'm really stuck on this one :|
