What behaviors do dogs exhibit to prove dominance?

my first thought was barking but i don't think it is dominance as much as communication of sorts. what about snarling or growling. another that comes to mind is a wide stance and slightly leaned back but even this only indicates aggression. i have seen a more passive form of dominance similar to what wishnuwelltoo has stated; the dog will do something like laying somewhere it does not belong or on top of a person. though this is rather questionable seeing as most dogs are only not allowed on beds and couches yet these are the most comfortable places to be, also, the dog may just want to be close to a human being(their owner, or someone who is kind to them).
